Boutwell, Owens & Company

Fitchburg, Massachusetts

Founded in 1887, Boutwell, Owens & Company is a family-owned packaging manufacturer in Connecticut.  Because they create individual unit packing for products all over the U.S., you’ve probably seen their work in the grocery store or pharmacy.  Boutwell, Owens & Company provides packaging solutions for all kinds of companies, but they pride themselves on helping small or new businesses.  Many new business owners don’t know how to create professional packaging that will sell their product.  Working with local designers, B,O & Co., guide businesses through the process of design.  They even remind sellers to register for the UPC code so that products can be easily carried in large retail outlets.  Edward Rowe, who has been with the company since the 1970’s, says that he is successful when, “you buy my packaging and sell your product and my packaging ends up in the trash.”

Owned by the Marshall family since 1985, Boutwell, Owens & Compnay was one of the first companies to move from solvent-based to water-based coatings and linseed inks.  They began recycling scrap paper in the 1970’s – long before it was fashionable.  Even on a perfect run of packaging, nearly 25% of the paper is wasted.  An often quoted statistic says that each ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees.  So, a company like Boutwell, Owens saves a lot of trees.  By that logic a recent 12-ton job done on recycled paper saved 204 trees.

The commitment to good customer service and cleaner environment are what has made Boutwell, Owens & Company successful for 120 years.  Because, as Edward Rowe says, “it’s just good business.”
